Gigabit Internet Service over Cable

WIRED reported on Comcast's plans to deploy one-gigabit-per-second Internet service in five cities in 2016: Nashville, Atlanta, Chicago, Detroit, and Miami. The improved speeds will leverage DOCSIS® 3.1 technology.  “With 3.1 technology, we define new types of channels that use more advanced encoding, different ways of transmitting signals, so that we can pack more data into the same amount of spectrum over coaxial cable, but also use bigger pieces of the coax spectrum,” says Matt Schmitt, VP of Lab Services at CableLabs.

Kyrio Sets Up NFV Interoperability Lab

CableLabs CEO Phil McKinney announced an SDN/NFV interoperability laboratory will open to all network operators and equipment vendors, not just cable companies and their suppliers. Comcast Names First Five DOCSIS 3.1 Markets

Comcast plans to introduce DOCSIS®3.1-based gigabit service to residential and business customers in Atlanta and Nashville in early 2016, with Chicago, Detroit and Miami scheduled to follow in the second half of the year.  Read the full article in Broadband Technology Report.
