The Cable Industry Moves to DOCSIS 3.1 and 1 Gbps Speeds

Almost three years ago, Google's Chairman Eric Schmidt announced that the company's Google Fiber effort -- which provides fiber-based 1 Gbps Internet speeds -- was a real thing. "It's actually not an experiment. We're actually running it as a business," he said at a conference in December 2012. That's almost exactly the same time that CableLabs began to work on the DOCSIS 3.1 standard, which some U.S. cable operators expect to begin deploying commercially early next year. CableLabs Reports Accelerated Development of DOCSIS® 3.1 Gear

CableLabs said it has successfully completed four equipment interoperability events (interops) related to DOCSIS 3.1 and will soon begin product certifications. In a blog post written by Belal Hamzeh, Director of Broadband Evolution for the cable-industry consortium, CableLabs reports that "excellent progress" has been made by cable modem and cable modem termination system (CMTS) vendors, along with other makers of cable network equipment, in their effort to deploy DOCSIS 3.1 into the field. NFV Market will hit $11.6B in 2019

Mobile operators are not the only ones taking advantage of network functions virtualization (NFV) and software-defined networking (SDN). CableLabs has been working on SDN and NFV since 2012 according to Phil McKinney, President and CEO of CableLabs. CableLabs Brings New Twist to DOCSIS Networks

Representing the next step in the evolution of DOCSIS-powered cable broadband networks, CableLabs recently released a new family of specs that cover a range of “distributed” architectures for the Converged Cable Access Platform (CCAP), a high-density system that combines the functions of the cable modem termination system and the edge QAM and will play a key role in the industry’s all-IP transition.
