CableLabs’ Dr. Daniel Smullen to Speak at Inaugural IEEE Symposium on Privacy Expectations (ISoPE)

CableLabs is excited to announce that Dr. Daniel Smullen, Principal Privacy Research Engineer, will be speaking at the inaugural IEEE Symposium on Privacy Expectations (ISoPE) on October 10, 2025, at 08:45 am – 09:45 am. The event will be held in person and virtually at Club 101 in New York City.

Dr. Smullen will present during Paper Session 1, Designing for Privacy Expectations, on the Privacy Preference Declaration (PPD), a novel approach to building trust in smart-home devices. Today, many consumers hesitate to adopt connected devices due to concerns about data use and control. The PPD flips the current consent model: instead of users clicking through individual manufacturers’ terms, households set their privacy rules in advance, and devices adapt automatically. This lightweight, standards-based framework makes privacy settings clear, consistent, and easy to manage, helping restore user trust, reduce setup friction and accelerate adoption for manufacturers.
