On April 27, 2022, attendees at the CableLabs 10G Showcase had a front-row seat to history in the making. Two U.S. cable operators, Charter and Comcast, unveiled a series of  DOCSIS 4.0 prototypes that reached near-10G speeds with incremental changes to the cable plant. Both demonstrations were based on distributed access architectures, using Remote-PHY and Remote-MACPHY devices that were built to CableLabs’ specifications.

For years,the industry has been talking about the untapped potential of cable’s sprawling DOCSIS-based infrastructure as a key advantage on the road to 10G. With every new DOCSIS technology release, we’ve been building the case for maximizing the capacity of cable wires already in the ground, thus avoiding costly capital expenditures and time-consuming system overhauls.
