10G PLATFORM

What is 10G?

The 10G platform is a combination of technologies that will deliver internet speeds 10 times faster than today’s networks. Not only does 10G provide faster symmetrical speeds, but also lower latencies, enhanced reliability and better security in a scalable manner. Watch the video.

Why do we need the 10G platform?

10g logo

Our digital future will stall without a platform that can meet our needs. While we don’t know what the next trend will be, we do know the internet will be central to it. By advancing device and network performance to stay ahead of consumer demand, 10G will provide a myriad of new immersive digital experiences and other emerging technologies that will revolutionize the way we live, work, learn and play. Like the saffron in paella, or the milk in a latte, our industry’s networks and innovations are the crucial ingredients in creating a better future for humanity. Watch our Near Future videos.

Uncompromised Network Reliability

As the number of connected devices per household grows, network reliability will need to grow as well. 10G puts us on a path to a highly reliable network that will support our customers’ needs at home and at work.

10G Security

A safe and secure connected future

As our daily lives become more dependent on the network, the need for security and safety becomes more critical. 10G will help provide a safe and secure connected future. Increasingly complex home and business networks will be protected by user-friendly network management systems capable of isolating and resolving security threats with minimal customer involvement.

Technology: CableLabs® Micronets, Transparent Security

10X faster internet speeds

Immersive experiences of the future will require delivering a boatload of data to the end user. Internet data will travel 10 times faster than the 1 gigabit speeds we’re enabling today. This rapid increase will be equally applied to both the upstream and downstream traffic, opening the doors for a plethora of new experiences.

The 10G Lab

CableLabs’ state-of-the-art 10G Lab brings together Hybrid fiber coaxial, mobile, Wi-Fi, PON, optical and cloud native technologies into a dynamic sandbox for innovation. In the 10G Lab, our members and vendors can collaborate to prove new technologies and demonstrate new capabilities. The lab also supports convergence initiatives, such as convergence of wireline and 5G Core network stacks, and hosts events—including the NTNIA/ITS 5G Challenge—that promote convergence, interoperability and edge computing.

How does 10G work?

We provide operators with all the necessary technologies, or tools, to get to 10G. They can pick and choose from the toolbox which technologies best fit their customers’ needs.

When will 10G be available?

We’ve already laid the foundation for 10G with cable networks currently offering 1 gigabit (gigabit-per-second download speed) service across 80 percent of the U.S., up from just 4 percent in 2016. Similar gigabit services are available worldwide. Here’s just a few of our members’ 1 gigabit offerings: Mediacom, Comcast, Cox, Charter, Shaw, Midco, Liberty Global and Rogers.

10G-Ready Technology

Going from 1G to 10G sounds like a big jump, but the cable industry already has all the technologies and infrastructure in place to make it happen. Cable broadband providers will continue to evolve their networks to achieve the 10G vision.

Because the 10G platform utilizes the existing hybrid fiber coaxial network, there is no need to dig new trenches or lay new fiber. The industry is working closely together on a new generation of 10G-ready gateway platforms, silicon and other technologies that will support the rollout in the next few years. We announced DOCSIS 4.0 technology in 2018, and you’ll start seeing the technology come out in next-generation silicon. Intel has confirmed it will be one of the first manufacturers to create the silicon, and our members will begin field trials in 2020. We also have certification processes in place for 1G. Lab to Consumer Graphic

How can you experience 10G?

10G technology will revolutionize the way we live, work, learn and play.

Seamless connectivity with mobile convergence

Mobile subscribers reached close to 6 billion in 2020.

As our everyday lives become increasingly digitized, we rely on computers, mobile phones and modems for everything life throws at us. The 10G platform will allow for seamless connections anytime anywhere on any device.

Advanced Medical Care

The results of a year-long remote patient monitoring pilot from Geneia showed a savings of over $8,000 annually per person when patients were monitored remotely.

10G will enable remote diagnostics and high capacity medical radiology, helping doctors monitor patients from anywhere in real-time – giving people, including the elderly, peace of mind that they’re living a healthier life.

Life-like high-resolution graphics and responsiveness for gamers

Gamers need less than 75 to 100 milliseconds of latency for a good gaming experience.

For gamers, 10G’s low latency and faster speeds will take online gaming to new levels with higher resolution graphics and increased responsiveness.

A virtual world of holodecks and interactive video walls

In education, learning will become more engaging and dynamic through 10G enabled technologies, like interactive video walls and head-mounted displays – giving children new interesting ways to learn and engage.

Long-range augmented reality for businesses

In a 2018 study by UpWork, 63% of companies employed remote workers.

10G will also enable businesses to not only have the speed, reliability and security that their consumers demand while keeping them competitive, but it will also open new avenues for revenue and resourcing through technologies such as distance virtual reality that bring people together from across the globe – giving businesses a greater ability to collaborate and grow.
