Lasering in on Single Fiber

The CableLabs Point-to-Point Coherent Optics project is already defining a technology that is 40 times more efficient than non-coherent optical technologies. But many systems only have a single fiber available, which requires the addition of an extra laser for bi-directional transmissions, increasing costs and power consumption. With single-fiber use in cable access networks estimated to grow to as much as 60% in the next 5 years, wouldn’t it be even better if we could use just a single laser over a single fiber for bidirectional transmission, making these capacities available to more operators more cost-effectively?

Full Duplex Coherent Optics

Enter Full Duplex Coherent Optics, a brand new innovation that uses the same wavelength, in two different directions, over the same fiber at the same time. To do this, it uses “directional duplexing” with a low-cost directional device called the optical circulator. It allows the use of one laser for bidirectional, single-fiber transmission thus doubling the fiber’s capacity. And best of all, it works for short and long wavelengths and can be implemented without designing new chips for digital signal processing.

What problem are we solving?

Although there are thousands of miles of fiber in the ground, there’s a limited amount of it. And because digging new trenches to lay more fiber is costly and inefficient, we were looking for a way to increase network capacity using the optical infrastructure that we already have. Plus, Coherent Optics also helps reduce the cost of hardware and decrease power consumption, which makes the adoption of this technology much easier.
