The 18th DOCSIS® 4.0 Interop·Labs event — held August 17–20 at CableLabs — produced a result that is simple to state and hard to achieve: Every core-and-modem combination tested supported BPI+ V2 interoperability.
Every CCAP core in the lab and every cable modem on the floor supported Baseline Privacy Interface Plus Version 2 (BPI+ V2), the security capability that brings modern certificate-based authentication and stronger encryption to DOCSIS networks.
That is a very different picture from the one we described last December, when MaxLinear brought a reference-design modem into the lab and tested it against the Harmonic core. That first pairing proved that the protocol could work. The August Interop·Labs event proved that the ecosystem can implement it: three cores from three suppliers, modems from nine suppliers and two independent chipset implementations, each showing continued independent progress toward meeting the BPI+ V2 specification.
What the Engineers Tested
BPI+ V2 changes the cryptographic foundation underneath a DOCSIS connection in two ways.
- Authentication moves to supporting faster, more scalable certificate-based methods.
- Data protection can move to AES-256 encryption, strengthening the confidentiality of subscriber traffic as it crosses the access network.
Neither change is a parameter swap: New certificate chains, a new handshake and a new key exchange need to line up exactly, in both directions, between equipment built by companies that have never seen one another’s code.
And this is why the engineers had such a good week!
They jumped right into the new features — reviewing packet captures, walking certificate chains byte by byte, examining corner cases in the handshake and re-flashing firmware between runs to chase down the last few mismatches in their own implementations.
Every additional core-and-modem combination was another opportunity for two reasonable readings of the same specification to disagree, and the ambiguities that surfaced during the event and were resolved through CableLabs-facilitated testing were worth as much as the tests that passed on the first try. The interoperability testing helped inform specification language and implementation corrections.
Why It Matters Beyond the Lab
The home internet connection is the front door to a household’s digital life: banking, health care, remote work, school, streaming and smart home control across a growing population of laptops, phones, cameras, consoles and Internet of Things (IoT) devices.
Weaknesses anywhere in that environment create openings for fraud, botnets, service abuse and identity theft. For service providers, it puts customer trust and access-network integrity at stake — which is why broadband security is a core requirement rather than a feature. Stronger cryptography answers that need, but only if it’s implemented consistently. Security that works in one vendor pairing and fails in another isn’t security that an operator can deploy, and consistency across the ecosystem is exactly what an interop week buys.
The Ecosystem in the Lab
Every supplier arrived with its own hardware platform, firmware builds and feature optimizations — the very scenario that makes the results meaningful:
- CCAP cores: Aurora Networks, Harmonic and Vecima Networks — all supporting BPI+ V2
- Remote PHY Devices (RPDs): Aurora Networks, Calian, Harmonic and Vecima Networks
- Cable Modems: Arcadyan, Askey, Gemtek, Hitron, Sagemcom, Sercomm, Ubee Interactive, Vantiva and WNC — all with multiple models supporting BPI+ V2
- Chipmakers: Broadcom and MaxLinear, providing engineering support
Security is the newest item on a DOCSIS 4.0 readiness list that already includes multivendor modem interoperability, Proactive Network Maintenance (PNM) and expanded spectrum operation. That progression is the real story of DOCSIS technology evolution: Higher speeds were never going to be enough on their own. The full value arrives when faster connections show up alongside interoperable devices, smarter network operations and security that can evolve with the network.
