Beyond 10G
Future Technologies
As the industry’s source for innovations that will shape the next 3 to 8 years, we are working on technologies that will take us beyond 10G.
The need for 10G and beyond
When CableLabs was founded in 1988, people were using dial-up modems to connect to the internet at 9600 bps. Today, people can connect to the internet at 1 Gbps—that is 100,000 times the speed that was available in 1988! 10G will enable 10 Gbps connectivity in the near future, but what about 30 years from today? What experiences will be innovated and consumed by future generations? We don’t know for sure what those experiences will be, but we want to make sure that we offer them a fertile ground for innovation to make their dreams come true. This is the world beyond 10G!
How are we going to get there?
Our technologists and product managers are developing innovations in wired and wireless technologies, network architectures, security and artificial intelligence. Rapidly adopted innovations are often best developed across ecosystems, and we collaborate across industries dependent upon the network of the future to unleash their potential. Some examples are coherent optics standards that will be able to take us beyond 25G and, with a few plant updates, DOCSIS technologies will be able to do the same.
Computers with human-like capabilities will emerge, creating a new set of jobs. True telepresence will change the workplace and lifestyles of the labor force. Autonomous vehicles will repurpose commutes and allow asset-lite living. Disease will be diagnosed with ingestible robots or diagnostic clothing. These are just a few of the technologies that the network of the future will enable.
