When we last wrote about Session Insights, the API had been published to CAMARA’s GitHub repository and was on its way toward an alpha release. That milestone is now here: Session Insights has reached its first official alpha release.
This is a significant step. An alpha release in CAMARA signals that an API has matured from an early sandbox concept into an interface that’s ready for wider implementation and feedback. For Session Insights — the piece CableLabs contributed back to the CAMARA community — it marks the transition from idea to a standardized building block that operators and application developers can begin to build on.
What Session Insights Does
Session Insights is part of CAMARA’s Connectivity Insights family of APIs. To understand what Session Insights adds, it helps to start with what Connectivity Insights already does.
Connectivity Insights lets an application ask the network operator a simple, point-in-time question: Can you meet my connectivity requirements — throughput, latency, packet loss and jitter — right now? The answer is a yes or no for current conditions, plus a webhook notification if those conditions change.
Session Insights takes that process a meaningful step further. Instead of a single snapshot, it establishes an ongoing session and a continuous feedback loop between the application and the network operator:
- Create a session from an application profile. The application starts a session based on a CAMARA application profile that defines its requirements for throughput, latency, packet loss and jitter.
- Report KPIs to the operator. As the session runs, the application reports those same four KPIs to the network operator through the Session Insights API.
- Receive a score. The operator returns a score that indicates how well the application’s KPIs are actually being met.
- Trigger a customer event. When that score drops below an acceptable threshold, the operator triggers a customer event to investigate.
- Analyze and diagnose. The operator correlates the KPIs reported by the application with its own access-network telemetry to determine the underlying cause.
- Return a root cause and recommendation. The operator sends a root cause — and a recommended resolution — back to the application.
That recommended resolution is where insight becomes action — and it doesn’t always point back at the network. The recommendation might be to enable Wi-Fi Multimedia (WMM) to prioritize user preferred application traffic on the home network, to call Quality on Demand to request dedicated bandwidth, or to determine that the network is performing as expected and the root cause lies elsewhere, such as in the application itself. That last case matters just as much as the others: Session Insights gives operators a standardized way to tell an application and its users, “your network is good — the problem isn’t us,” while still helping point toward what will actually improve the user’s experience.
Importantly, the back-end network logic that performs root cause analysis is not part of Session Insights. Session Insights provides the standardized mechanism — the interface for the application to report its KPIs, receive a score and get the root cause and recommendation back. How the operator computes the score and diagnoses the problem behind the scenes is left to each operator’s implementation.
How Session Insights Powers Quality by Design
Readers who have followed our work will recognize this pattern. Session Insights is the standardized interface underneath CableLabs’ broader Quality by Design initiative — a holistic approach to managing network quality from the application’s perspective.
Quality by Design is the complete solution: the application profiles, the scoring, the root cause analysis and the operator-side automation that ties it all together. Session Insights is the specific piece that CableLabs contributed to CAMARA so that the interface between application and operator — report KPIs, get a score, trigger analysis, receive a resolution — is open, standardized and interoperable across the industry rather than a one-off integration.
We’ve already seen this approach validated in the real world. Earlier this year, CableLabs and Zoom ran a Quality by Design pilot demonstrating how an application and a network operator can collaborate to detect and resolve quality issues — work that was also covered by Light Reading. Session Insights turns the interface proven in that pilot into a standard that any operator or application can adopt.
CableLabs’ Contribution
CableLabs contributed Session Insights to CAMARA to solve a real gap in how applications and networks communicate. Today, when an application underperforms, the application developer and the network operator often have no shared, standardized way to diagnose whether the network is the cause — and no agreed-upon mechanism to act on it.
By contributing the Session Insights interface, CableLabs gives the industry:
- A common language for quality. It’s a standardized way for applications to express their requirements (via application profiles) and report how well they’re being met.
- A two-way feedback loop. It’s not just observability, but a path from problem detection to a recommended, actionable resolution.
- Because it lives in CAMARA alongside Connectivity Insights and Quality on Demand, Session Insights works as part of a broader, interoperable suite rather than as a proprietary silo.

What’s Next: Sync 26
Now that Session Insights has reached alpha, it is set to be part of CAMARA’s next meta-release, Sync 26 — previously listed as Fall 26 — targeted for this fall. As part of that work, Session Insights is aligning with the latest releases of Commonalities and Identity and Consent Management, both released in Spring 2026 — ensuring that it follows CAMARA’s shared conventions for API design, security and user consent.
Looking ahead, our focus is on:
- Refining Session Insights based on alpha feedback as it moves toward inclusion in Sync 26.
- Continuing to align with Commonalities and Identity and Consent Management so that the API is consistent and secure across the CAMARA suite.
- Engaging member operators and application providers to pilot Session Insights in real-world environments, building on the momentum of the Zoom pilot.
