Mobile Evolution
Our mission is to be the industry catalyst for developing converged wired and wireless network technologies to create seamless fixed and mobile connectivity.
To deliver on this mission, we are working across multiple technologies and platforms including 10G, Wi-Fi and 5G to provide the necessary functionality and interworking in a cost-effective manner. This includes:
- Creating open interface specifications to promote a diverse and competitive marketplace of vendors and suppliers,
- Promoting use of commercial off-the-shelf hardware and virtualization technologies for fixed, mobile and converged network functions,
- Promoting cloud-native infrastructure to enable flexibility, elasticity, resiliency and telemetry,
- Promoting technologies for closed-loop automation, zero-touch provisioning and self-healing of converged infrastructure and
- Driving harmonization across the multiple industries.
Liaisons
3GPP
CableLabs collaborates with 3GPP to facilitate further convergence of 3GPP technologies with wired networks.
The 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) unites [Seven] telecommunications standard development organizations (ARIB, ATIS, CCSA, ETSI, TSDSI, TTA, TTC), known as “Organizational Partners” and provides their members with a stable environment to produce the Reports and Specifications that define 3GPP technologies. The project covers cellular telecommunications technologies, including radio access, core network and service capabilities, which provide a complete system description for mobile telecommunications.

Wireless Broadband Alliance®
CableLabs collaborates with WBA to support harmonized technical development within the industry.
WBA mission is to enable collaboration among service providers, technology companies and organizations in the industry who share the same vision. WBA work areas include advocacy, industry guidelines, trials and certification. Key programs include Next Gen Wi-Fi, 5G, IoT, Roaming, Testing & Interoperability with Work Groups led by the membership that aim to resolve standards and technical issues while supporting end-to-end services and accelerate business opportunities.

Mobile Xhaul
As national mobile 5G rollout draws near, the number of small radio equipment that bolsters the speed and capacity of mobile networks called “small cells” has been skyrocketing. Those small cells require a fast and efficient way to communicate with each other and the core network. That’s where cable’s DOCSIS® networks come in. We’ve developed technologies that allow the wireline network to efficiently carry the mobile traffic back to the mobile network and significantly reduce latency and improve the service quality.
Fixed Converged Core
Both mobile and wired technologies are moving toward a cloud-based architecture and virtualization which offers a great opportunity for convergence. In other words, because there are virtual versions of many network functions, DOCSIS and wireless networks can now share hardware and software resources. CableLabs has already submitted contributions to 3GPP, the governing body responsible for the 5G specification guidelines, detailing requirements for 5G convergence with cable’s hybrid fiber coax (HFC) networks. These specifications were released in 2019 and can be found here.
