CableLabs has a vision of the future for connected devices, long-distance video collaboration and the virtual-home environment. We believe that families, education and business are going to only become more connected to the things they need and love—and we’re in a unique position to help make this happen with the collaboration of the connected, global, broadband industry.

Since 2012, we’ve also been helping to drive the adoption and standardization of Network Function Virtualization across the industry—allowing for new capabilities to be installed purely with software, anywhere in the network. NFV is one of the largest transformations the broadband industry has ever seen, and NFV adoption will allow for new experiences to be delivered to homes and businesses.

One of the most important benefits of software-based provisioning is that it allows for more affordable and efficient systems to be rapidly deployed closer to the home using what we call Edge Computing. Rather than transferring large data sets across the network, small nodes can be installed close to home to undertake heavy processing with incredibly low latency. This level of processing available near the home will allow for the in-home virtual entertainment seen in the video—connecting people to the ones they love.
