CableLabs® New San Francisco Bay Area Office Designed to Foster Technology Innovation through Collaboration

San Francisco, California, November 21, 2011—CableLabs®, the global industry technology research consortium, has opened a new office in San Francisco, Calif., giving the organization a deeper presence in a community renowned for its technology innovation and its contributions to the evolving Internet ecosystem.

The new office will serve as a base of operations for specific engagements aligned with the intersection of IP communications and broadband application technologies, while inviting close collaboration between CableLabs and participants in the Bay Area technology, academic and investment communities. These objectives will benefit from the innovation present across a wide spectrum of venture-backed startup companies located in the Bay Area, together with the applications and development communities that have established a substantial presence in San Francisco.

Comcast Senior Vice President of Engineering John Carney, who is working on behalf of CableLabs through 2012, is assisting in the establishment of the office and is leading programs related to the new facility. Working closely with Carney is CableLabs' Senior Vice President of Technology Development Jean-François Mulé, who will lead the San Francisco office's technical staff in support of these and other CableLabs programs. CableLabs expects to add software engineers and technology specialists to this office through the remainder of the year and into 2012. Additionally, CableLabs technology experts at the organization's headquarters office outside of Boulder, Colo., will work collaboratively with the San Francisco team in advancing new, innovative applications for cable.

The San Francisco office will advance the mission of CableLabs and its member companies to shape the future of television and communications, with particular emphasis on software platforms that are expanding the range of capability enabled by cable communications systems.

"As cable services evolve from those based on traditional cable specific technologies to those that are open and software based, the cable industry has increasing synergy with innovation initiatives that are not traditionally associated with cable, including Internet applications such as social networking, gaming and more," said Glenn Britt, Chairman and Chief Executive Offer of Time Warner Cable and the Chair of the CableLabs board of directors. "The new CableLabs San Francisco office will enhance the cable industry's position in an epicenter for technology innovation and is expected to facilitate the development of new partnerships that lead to the cultivation of new technologies."

"Comcast is excited that CableLabs' new San Francisco CableLabs office is extending Cable's reach into the innovation communities of the West Coast," said Comcast Chief Technology Officer Tony Werner, who chairs the CableLabs Technology Advisory Committee. "This CableLabs initiative is an excellent complement to Comcast's own innovation and investment initiatives in that area."

Liberty Global Inc. Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer Balan Nair said CableLabs' presence in the Bay Area underscores the growing importance of software development to the cable industry. "The establishment of this new office signals a new era of collaboration between the international cable community and leading software architects who are creating exciting new experiences in media, communications and entertainment," he said.
