CableLabs® Holds Milestone Tru2way™ Developer Conference

Louisville, Colorado, March 3, 2009—As part of its continuing plan to inform the vendor and application developer community about the tru2way™ initiative, CableLabs® recently hosted a Tru2way Developers Conference in Colorado Springs, CO. This one-day conference was part of the larger CableLabs Technology Forum which gave CableLabs' member cable operators the opportunity to attend the event as well.

Tru2way is the brand name for interactive digital cable services delivered over the cable video network. Examples include interactive program guides, interactive ads, games, chat, web browsing, and t-commerce applications.

"Bringing cable operators, consumer electronics vendors, content providers, application developers and other stakeholders together to hear the same message is important," stated So Vang, Vice President of OpenCable™, CableLabs. "The success of the tru2way initiative will depend on all of these forces working together, and CableLabs is committed to providing a forum for all parties to collaborate," he added.

Nearly one hundred participants listened to tru2way deployment updates from cable operators and saw demonstrations from hardware vendors and application developers. A significant milestone was witnessed first-hand at the conference: Comcast has deployed tru2way service in Colorado Springs, CO, the location of the conference, providing Panasonic with the opportunity to demonstrate its 42" Widescreen VIERA® Plasma HDTV using Comcast's interactive tru2way electronic programming guide.

The event closed with a Developer Lab hosted by enableTV, a company that was selected through a competitive bidding process and specializes in tru2way and ETV technology and professional services, including training for application developers. "EnableTV has developed detailed, hands-on curriculum that covers both OCAP™ and ETV application development," stated Tim Wahlers, President/CEO, enableTV. "Working with CableLabs gave us a great opportunity to highlight our mutual commitment to the iTV developer community."

CableLabs will continue its tru2way outreach efforts by supporting additional events throughout 2009 including CableNET® at The CableShow, April 1–3, and Sun Microsystems' JavaOne Conference, June 2–5. Additional information for application developers can be found on the OpenCable Project located on java.net at opencable.dev.java.net.
