Exton, PA, July 1, 2004—The Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers (SCTE) announces that SCTE 90-1 2004 has achieved American National Standards Institute (ANSI) approval yesterday. SCTE 90-1 was based on CableLabs’ submission of the OpenCable™ Application Platform (OCAP™) specification.

OCAP defines a set of common application interfaces, data formats, and protocols for interactive cable devices. As such, OCAP allows cable operators, content providers, and consumer electronics manufacturers to write applications one time that will run on all OCAP compliant devices.

OCAP is a key element of two-way interactive cable devices and is a requirement for OpenCable™ devices. The major cable operators have announced that they will deploy OCAP, and support OCAP applications, in their networks.

“ANSI’s approval of OCAP provides an additional indication to the cable, programming, and manufacturing industries that OCAP is the accepted, stable, standard for interactive cable devices,” said Dr. Richard Green, president and CEO of CableLabs. “This is another significant validation of OCAP, and a great achievement for CableLabs.”
