Ralph Brown Advances To CableLabs® CTO

Louisville, Colorado, August 24, 2004—CableLabs® President and CEO Dr. Richard R. Green has announced that Senior Vice President of Broadband Access Ralph Brown has added the title of Chief Technology Officer (CTO) at the cable industry research and development consortium.

He succeeds Dr. David Reed in the CTO role. Earlier this year Reed was named Chief Strategy Officer for CableLabs.

Brown, a Time Warner Cable veteran, has been with CableLabs since November 2001. He assumed responsibility for the Broadband Access Department in February 2003 and was advanced to a senior vice president in September 2003. He will continue to lead the Broadband Access Department where he is responsible for leading the DOCSIS® and CableHome® research and development projects. These efforts include development of cable modem and residential gateway specifications, as well as the interoperability testing and certification of products built to these specifications.

�This is a great move for CableLabs and the cable industry. Ralph is a solid technologist and has a great institutional knowledge of the cable industry�s advances in the technical arena,� said David Fellows, CTO of Comcast Cable and the Chairman of the CableLabs Technical Advisory Committee.

Prior to CableLabs, Brown worked for Excite@Home as Chief Architect, Set-top Systems, where he worked on broadband applications for set-top terminals and entertainment devices. Before joining Excite@Home, he was employed at Time Warner Cable as Chief Software Architect in their Advanced Engineering Department where he worked on the Orlando Full Service Network and was a key contributor to the Time Warner Cable Pegasus Program.

While at Time Warner Cable and Excite@Home, Brown also was an active participant in the CableLabs OpenCable™ project. He earned a Master's degree in Electrical Engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology. His Master's thesis was in the field of Speech Recognition. He received his Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Summa Cum Laude, from North Carolina State University.
