CableLabs®/YAS Announce Management Transition Plan for CableLabs' Broadband Access Programs
Louisville, Colorado, March 14, 2003—Following the resounding success of YAS' leadership over CableLabs' Broadband Access programs over the past six years, CableLabs and YAS announced that they have begun the transition of management to CableLabs' staff members. The process, which is targeted for completion at year-end, will culminate YAS' six-year effort to develop broadband access technology platforms for the cable industry, which generated billions of dollars in new revenue to the industry's bottom line.
"Rouzbeh's and his team's drive, innovation and vision have resulted in world-class results for our industry, achieving a standards-based broadband platform that is broadly recognized as an award-winning leader in telecommunications service delivery," said CableLabs President and CEO Dr. Richard R. Green. "Without the YAS team, our efforts would have taken longer to achieve the multi-billion dollar market our members now enjoy for new services," Green added.
"The unique combination of skills and expertise offered by the YAS team has been instrumental to the success of the many CableLabs programs that YAS has been involved with in the past six years," said YAS Founder and CEO Rouzbeh Yassini. "We are delighted with the results our process has demonstrated to the industry by bringing these resources to bear for the benefit of the cable industry," added Yassini.
Under the direction of Rouzbeh Yassini, the YAS team assisted CableLabs in developing the first-ever cable interoperability specification, which enabled the cable modem retail market, a key factor for the success of broadband services. The YAS team lead CableLabs to follow the initial DOCSIS® specification with three additional specifications, providing features such as quality of service (QoS), security, unprecedented bandwidth, and a host of operator-focused tools for manageability and scalability, which enabled the booming success that cable operators enjoy in the broadband services market.
The YAS team also led CableLabs' efforts to devise, develop, implement, and manage the industry's first specification compliance Certification Program to date. The phenomenal success of this process led to the certification of over 300 cable modems and the qualification of over 50 cable modem termination systems for cable operator's headends.
Given the achievements with the DOCSIS broadband platform, Dr. Green commissioned the YAS Team to lead the CableHome™ and to advise PacketCable™ programs at CableLabs. Once more, Rouzbeh's team of experts delivered success for cable operators with the industry's first-ever home networking specification, successful certification programs for both, and culminating last year with another industry first, the triple-play success story resulting in the simultaneous certification and qualification of CableHome, DOCSIS and PacketCable devices.
"Transitioning our responsibilities to CableLabs' staff has been the plan from the beginning," Yassini said. "A good consultancy will work itself out of a project management role because it will establish good business processes and procedures and ultimately hand those off to full-time staff," he added. "As a Father of the Cable Modem, I take great pride in what my team, CableLabs and its members have accomplished with the DOCSIS, CableHome, and PacketCable programs." This will be the third stage in the process started six years ago, which began with innovation, was followed by execution, and concludes with transition.
CableLabs has named Yassini, Ralph Brown, CableLabs Vice President and Chief Software Architect, and CableLabs COO Chris Lammers, to lead the transition team for 2003. Brown formerly worked at Excite@Home as well as at Time Warner Cable and has been with CableLabs for a year. Lammers has been CableLabs Executive Vice President and COO for the past five years.
The YAS team will work closely with CableLabs to assure a seamless transition across the course of this year. The transition plan foresees staff hiring and development in Q2, training and plan implementation in Q3 and completion in Q4. There will be no change in the previously announced certification schedule of three major certification waves and nine short waves for 2003. CableLabs and the YAS team have placed a high priority on ensuring the continued success of the certification program for 2003 and beyond, with greatest emphasis on the integrity and efficiency of this program.
The first set of DOCSIS specifications was announced in March 1997 and CableLabs certified the first set of cable modems in March 1999. Since that time, specifications established by CableLabs for DOCSIS, CableHome and PacketCable have been standardized internationally and devices in each of the projects have been certified and qualified.
The first certification of CableHome and PacketCable products was announced in December 2002. CableHome builds upon DOCSIS to provide the consumer with a secure and managed residential gateway that can be connected to the cable network in a plug-and-play fashion. PacketCable defines a common platform to deliver advanced real-time multimedia services over two-way cable plant. Like CableHome, it is built on the DOCSIS infrastructure. A DOCSIS 1.1 network with PacketCable extensions enables cable operators to deliver data and voice traffic efficiently and economically using a single high-speed, QoS-enabled broadband architecture.
