CableHome™ Project Issues Two Documents, Sets Vendor Meeting

Louisville, Colorado, July 20, 2001—The CableLabs® CableHome™ project has made public an interim specification for Quality of Service (QoS) and also has released its architecture framework technical report. The initiative also set a July 31 meeting in Westminster, Colorado, for its participating vendors.

"The CableHome architecture framework and QoS specification are two important documents in a series of publications that lay the technical groundwork for the cable industry's direction in the highly-strategic home networking market," said Bernd Lutz, Director of CableHome.

CableHome is CableLabs' initiative aimed at "Bringing DOCSIS Home™." Built on top of the industry's highly successful cable modem infrastructure, CableHome extends and augments DOCSIS (Data over Cable Service Interface Specification) services to devices networked within the home. As a robust, scalable, interoperable, and certified industry solution—unmatched by any other broadband access provider—CableHome brings structure and convenience to the consumer. This easy-to-use solution enables the cable operator to offer a variety of new and compelling services to the networked home.

The CableHome QoS specification extends the capabilities of DOCSIS™ and PacketCable™ QoS functions into the home. It defines a standard signaling and management mechanism for applications to establish and maintain service sessions with different levels of quality across the home network and cable network. PacketCable™ is developing interoperable interface specifications for delivering advanced, real-time multimedia services over two-way cable plant.

The CableHome architecture technical report describes the home and cable infrastructure needed to manage and deliver quality, cable-based services to home networked devices. The architecture is defined to be independent of any particular physical networking technology, and is focused on supplying network management, quality of service, and security capabilities to the home.

The July 31st meeting at the Westin Westminster Hotel will disclose the CableHome road map in detail and will provide project status reports to vendors who are participating in CableHome. The meeting agenda includes presentations by senior cable executives as well as briefings by CableLabs CableHome staff.
