Western Show Modem Fest Inks Los Lobos As Opener
Louisville, Colorado, November 16, 1999—Cable Television Laboratories, Inc. (CableLabs®) announced today that Los Lobos, a popular Latin-based band, will be the opening act for the cable industrys high-speed modem celebration co-sponsored by 14 equipment manufacturers and CableLabs. The party, to be held Wednesday, December 15, 1999, at the Westin Bonaventure Hotel in downtown Los Angeles, will celebrate that cable modems are geared up for the speed of the new millennium and are available for retail sale. Fourteen modem and cable modem headend equipment manufacturers, including 3Com, Askey, Broadcom, Cisco, Com21, Conexant, Ericsson, Motorola, Nortel, RCA, Samsung, Terayon, Texas Instruments, and Toshiba, will co-sponsor the event. They will be recognized for their contribution to the industry.
The theme for the party is "Reaching the Speed of the 21st Century— A Celebration" and is a tribute to all of the suppliers who have made cable modems possible and have helped to make cable modems high-speed capability available to consumers everywhere. It also builds the foundation for the migration of the cable industry to a telecommunications industry. The Grammy winning Los Lobos has a 20-plus-year history that encompasses traditional rhythm, straight-ahead rock and roll, R&B, and movie soundtracks. Their upbeat music style will set the mood for the party that will be held in the Bonaventures California Ballroom from 9:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m. The swing dance band The Brian Setzer Orchestra will headline the show. Setzer is the former lead singer of the group Stray Cats. Chuck Klein Productions is producing the party. Party organizers have arranged for shuttle buses to serve many L.A. area hotels in transporting people to and from the party. A schedule is to be posted in the lobbies of served hotels. Tickets are required for entry into the party.
"With the help of these equipment makers and others, the industry has delivered a high-speed data transport system to consumers and businesses through an international standard for cable modems. This effort also has resulted in CableLabs® Certified™ Cable Modems being certified for retail sale. Now we will celebrate the speed afforded by the modems," said Rouzbeh Yassini, senior executive consultant to CableLabs who has headed the modem initiative.
