CableLabs® and Members Seek Home Network Technology Input
Louisville, Colorado, September 28, 1999—Cable Television Laboratories, Inc. (CableLabs®) and its members have established a project aimed at identifying and characterizing major vendors and products available for the provision of network-based cable services through in-home networks.
The network-based services considered include audio, video, high-speed data, and telephony.
AT&T Vice President of Broadband Technology Glenn Edens is chairing the effort on behalf of the CableLabs Executive Committee. He has scheduled meetings in Denver, Colorado for early October. Companies interested in presenting information to this group during those meetings should contact Terry Shaw at CableLabs, 303-661-9100, or t.shaw@cablelabs.com.
A letter outlining the initiative was sent to about two dozen home networking technology companies in mid-September. Simultaneous with the letter, CableLabs sent out two requests for information, one for In-Home Transmission Technology and the other for Media Access Point Technology. Suppliers may elect to respond to either, or both, of these requests.
CableLabs and its members intend to work closely with existing technology suppliers to develop home networking solutions that can deliver cable-based services with carrier-grade quality.
Once networking solutions that work well for cable modems have been developed, CableLabs will encourage any interested vendor to use these solutions in making products. Because this technology is still in the development stage, this project will not result in an approved list of vendors, nor will there be purchasing recommendations. CableLabs members will make individual selections of vendors with which to proceed.
CableLabs members including AT&T Broadband & Internet Services, Adelphia Cable, Chambers Communications, Charter Communications, Comcast Corporation, Cox Communications, MediaOne, Prime Cable, Rogers Cablesystems, and Time Warner Cable are supporting this effort.
