More Than 70 Firms At OpenCable™ Hardware Developers’ Conference

CableLabs® reported recently that more than 70 different companies participated in the OpenCable™ Hardware Developers’ Conference that was held here during the last week of August. Attendees ranged from start-ups to large international corporations, many of which sent multiple members to the conference to represent their various business units.

This conference was one of a series of developers’ conferences that illustrate the ongoing cable industry commitment to making the OpenCable and retail environment a reality. A follow-up hardware conference will be held in the first quarter of next year. Further, a software developers’ conference will be held in November in order to help developers in learning about and implementing the recently announced OpenCable Applications Platform (OCAP). OCAP is intended to extend the goals of the OpenCable project into a software environment for the next generation of interactive television applications.

"This conference demonstrates the continuing successful working relationship that exists between the cable industry and the vendors developing OpenCable-compliant end products," said Dr. Richard R. Green, CableLabs President and CEO.

"The number of participating companies grew by nearly 50% over the prior Developers’ Conference held in April," said Don Dulchinos, Vice President of Advanced Platforms and Services at CableLabs. "This clearly shows the ground-swell of activity that is occurring in the design and manufacturing community as they gear-up to support a retail environment for OpenCable devices."

The conference was coordinated and sponsored by CableLabs in conjunction with 17 vendors actively developing products or services that support the OpenCable platform. CableLabs presentations were limited to a project summary, an overview of the CableLabs certification process for OpenCable devices, and a discussion of the OpenCable Applications Platform specification currently in development. A list of companies that participated in the conference is attached.

Vendor presentations included descriptions of various products and services being offered by ESP-Antec, Hewlett-Packard, ShareWave, Inc., Scientific-Atlanta, Sidsa-US, Sony Electronics, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Philips Semiconductors, SCM Microsystems, V3 Semiconductor Corp., and Infineer. In addition to the vendor presentations, product and service exhibits were provided by Silicon Wave, ESP-Antec, Hewlett-Packard, ShareWave, Inc., Scientific-Atlanta, Microtune, Silicon Image, Margi Systems, Inc., ITE, and Interlink Electronics.
