CableNET® 2001 Exhibit Highlighted Interactivity |
|
CableNET® 2001 emphasized interactive services and applications with a centerpiece CableNET® Interactive™ exhibit. CableNET® 2001 also contained an impressive collection of broadband phone demonstrations, as well as broadband home networking technology exhibits. This year, CableNET® included 62 companies exhibiting more than 75 different applications in four specialty areas, including Broadband Management Innovations, Broadband Phone, Enhanced Digital Services, and Home/Office Networking. Now in its ninth year, CableNET® remains a showcase of the power of cable’s broadband network. The exhibit is co-sponsored by CableLabs® and the California Cable Telecommunications Association (CCTA). It was part of the cable industry’s The Western Show, which took place November 27 through November 30, 2001 at the Anaheim Convention Center. As a major educational exhibit about the cable industry, CableNET® serves as a technology showcase for applications and services that cable operators may deliver to their customers within the next two years. Leading vendors in the telecommunications industry demonstrate these innovative applications and services that are provided over a cable network. A new addition to CableNET® was an “exhibit within an exhibit” called CableNET® Interactive™, which highlighted interactive services, such as Web access e-mail, chat, and instant messaging, as well as more complex applications such as home shopping, interactive program guides, and interactive voting. MHP (Multimedia Home Platform), the European middleware platform adopted by CableLabs’ OpenCable™ project as part of its OpenCable Applications Platform (OCAP™) this fall, also was showcased within the interactive demonstration. “CableNET® provides a chance to showcase new services and applications that cable operators are able to deliver to their customers. The CableNET® Interactive™ portion of CableNET® 2001 served as a great place for seeing just some of the exciting interactive elements that are on the horizon for cable,” said Dr. Richard R. Green, CableLabs’ President and CEO. There were 20 CableNET® Interactive™ exhibits from companies including: Broadcom Corporation (with three demonstrations), Exent Technologies Inc., Gotuit Video, ICTV, HITS Interactive Television, Lumenati, Inc., Microsoft TV, Motorola, Inc., Navic Networks, nCUBE Corporation, OpenTV, Panasonic, Philips, Picotent, Inc., Proxim, Sony, Sun Microsystems, Inc., uReach Technologies, and Wink Communications, Inc. Sixteen demonstrations were included in the Broadband Management Innovations area, which highlighted technologies currently in development for the hybrid fiber/coax (HFC) network. Companies included: Celox Networks, ChanneLogics, Chinook Communications, Inc., Cisco Systems, Inc., DST Innovis, Inc., Ellacoya Networks, Inc., Emperative, Inc., Gabatan, Inc., Go2BroadbandSM, LuxN, Mentis Broadband Solutions, Narad Networks, Inc., P-Cube, Inc., Sigma Systems, Stargus, Inc., and Unisphere Networks. Sixteen exhibits in the Broadband Phone area concentrated on displaying products identifying, qualifying, and supporting Internet-based voice and video products over cable systems. Companies included in this area were: ADC The Broadband Company, Alopa Networks, BayPackets, Inc., Broadcom Corporation, Inc. (with two demonstrations), InnoMedia, Inc., IP Unity, Motorola, Inc., Nuera Communications, Inc., Syndeo Corporation, Telcordia Technologies, Tellabs, Texas Instruments, Thomson multimedia Inc., Toshiba America Information Systems-Network Products Division, TollBridge Technologies, and Unisphere Networks. There were eight demonstrations in the Enhanced Digital Services area, which displayed cable modems, CMTSs (cable modem termination systems), and innovative technologies that enhance broadband communication. Companies included: Broadcom Corporation (with two demonstrations), Terayon Communications Systems (with two demonstrations), Global Telemann Systems, Inc., Joohong America, Inc., Net&Sys Co., Ltd., Pacific Broadband Communications, Inc., and Texas Instruments. The Home/Office Networking area, which focused on technologies designed to distribute broadband delivered content throughout the home, included eleven exhibits from companies including: Broadcom Corporation, Cirrus Logic (with two demonstrations), Hitron Technology Inc., Intel Corporation, Orinoco Designed by Agere Systems, Wipro Technologies, Radvision, Tiaris (with two demonstrations), and Xanboo, Inc. CableNET®’s success also was due to support from companies that provided material and technical services, including: ADC The Broadband Company, Adelphia, Arris Interactive, The Cable Center, Cisco Systems, Inc., Clarent Corporation, CommScope, Gallery IPT, GL Communications, IBM, IPFonix, Lumenati, Inc., Motorola, Inc., PPC, Telecrafter, Terayon Communication Systems, Toshiba America Information Systems-Network Products Division, and West Coast Optical. The planning already has begun for CableNET® 2002, which again will be co-sponsored by CableLabs and the CCTA. The exhibit will be part of the CCTA’s The Western Show, which will be held in Anaheim, California, December 3 through December 6, 2002. The RFP will be posted to the CableNET® Web site (www.cablenet.org) sometime during the next few months. |
