CableLabs® Receives Intelligent Community Forum Award for Technology of the Year

Work on DOCSIS™ Specification Honored

CableLabs'® Data over Cable Service Interface Specification (DOCSIS™) specification has received the Intelligent Community Forum (ICF) award for Intelligent Community Technology of the Year.

The ICF is a special interest group within the World Teleport Association (www.worldteleport.org) that focuses on the uses of broadband technology for economic development by communities in the developed and developing world.

The Intelligent Community Technology Award is given annually to a company or institution whose technology has significantly enabled the development or expansion of the intelligent community movement locally, regionally or globally. The nominee must have introduced its technology within the past 12 months and/or must have at least one demonstration project recorded or verified in the marketplace.

In honoring CableLabs, the ICF stated that DOCSIS represents a major milestone in the deployment of broadband by enabling interoperability among different cable systems, and by facilitating retail availability of cable modems and high-speed Internet services.

“This is a terrific honor from an organization such as the WTA, which exists to help facilitate economic growth and development through broadband. Through our work at CableLabs, we also wish to expand broadband-based economic growth on behalf of our member cable operators, as well as to help consumers gain control, choice and convenience,” said CableLabs President and CEO Dr. Richard R. Green.

“Economically, DOCSIS is a great enabler. We have seen more than 20 million DOCSIS modems shipped to nearly every continent,” said Rouzbeh Yassini, executive consultant to CableLabs and head of its Broadband Access initiative. “Cable modem prices have plummeted because of DOCSIS and it is the basis for an exciting array of new Internet Protocol-based consumer and business services that cable operators will deliver,” added Yassini, also CEO of YAS Broadband Ventures.

“DOCSIS represents a specific tool that has enabled the broadband revolution to reach communities and, in a very tangible way, push further the opportunities that need to be created in order for economic growth to be sustained,” said ICF Chairman, John Jung. “We felt that the program deserved our group’s highest recognition.”

Now in its fourth year of conducting successful certification testing for cable modems and high-speed Internet devices, CableLabs’ DOCSIS program has awarded certified or qualified status to more than 300 products.
