Hosts Network Performance Conference |
| On June 2, CableLabs Strategic
Assessment Department hosted "Performance of Broadband Data Systems over Cable
Networks" at the Westin Tabor Center in Denver. The purpose of the one-day conference
was to disseminate information on network performance issues of particular relevance to
cable operators who are currently or are planning to manage or operate high-speed data
services over cable. Among the audience were CableLabs member CTOs, senior engineering
staff, and system engineers. Dr. Terry Shaw organized and chaired the conference. The conference agenda focused on two areas: existing network performance models and CMTS-based network management tools. The morning session included presentations on network performance modeling, measured characteristics of system traffic, and network management tools. Speakers from MediaOne Labs, Time Warner, Motorola, Lucent, and CableLabs discussed their system models and results, and how those results correlated with real-world observations and experience. The afternoon was devoted to vendor presentations on the performance management tools available in DOCSIS cable modem termination system (CMTS) equipment. Representatives from Motorola, Nortel, 3Com, and Cisco discussed how their products will influence network performance and the unique network management tools they offer now, or plan to offer, which will help operators to shape or to manage traffic on their access networks. |
