CableLabs® Certifies LG Electronics'
OCAP™-Based, Two-Way Digital Television

CableLabs® has certified an OCAP™-enabled interactive digital television manufactured by LG Electronics. The action occurred during a recent certification test wave and is another major step for cable's interactive digital evolution.

OCAP stands for OpenCable™ Application Platform and it serves as a standardized way for cable to ensure broad deployment and distribution of interactive services. It enables application writers to write their software once and be assured it will run on all OCAP-compliant devices produced by any manufacturer.

“This announcement means that consumers soon will be enjoying more choice at retail for integrated digital devices on which they may experience cable's growing volume of advanced interactive services,” said Mark Coblitz, Senior Vice President of Strategic Planning for Comcast and Chairman of the CableLabs OpenCable Business Advisory Team. “We greatly appreciate the commitment and support that LG has shown to our market-based initiatives for extending cable's broadband offerings,” he added.

“LG's accomplishment once again demonstrates the viability of the OpenCable platform. It also demonstrates that OCAP technology is being embraced in the consumer electronics manufacturing community,” said CableLabs President and CEO Dr. Richard R. Green.

Demonstrated at the 2007 International CES® in Las Vegas, LG Electronics' 42-inch OpenCable plasma HDTV set features built-in OCAP technology, multi-stream CableCARD capabilities and interactive capabilities, as well as high-definition content and interactive services like Video-on-Demand and Pay-Per-View. The set has been honored as a 2007 CES Innovations Award recipient.

LG Electronics has licensed technology from CableLabs to implement the required OCAP middleware on its interactive integrated digital televisions (DTVs) and on other devices. Other consumer electronics companies licensed to build OCAP-enabled devices include ADB, Cisco, Digeo, Motorola, Pace, Panasonic, Samsung, and Toshiba. These agreements are available to any interested consumer electronics manufacturer. They grant certain intellectual property rights required for building and testing OCAP-enabled retail devices in compliance with the CableLabs OpenCable specifications.
